✨ A Complete Guide to the Box Averaging (Blur) Tool
PhenoCapture’s Box Averaging tool is an advanced, high-performance feature designed to smooth images and reduce noise. By utilizing a highly optimized, two-pass parallel processing algorithm, it allows you to apply varying levels of blur—from a subtle 3×3 softening to a heavy 15×15 blur—without slowing down your workflow.
💡 Key Features
- Multiple Blur Intensities: Choose from seven different blur strengths depending on your needs. Select a light 3×3 or 5×5 radius for minor noise reduction, or go all the way up to 15×15 for a deep, smooth blur.
- Lightning-Fast Parallel Processing: The tool separates the blur into horizontal and vertical passes (a clever 1D sliding window optimization). Combined with multi-core parallel processing, it can handle massive, high-resolution images in a fraction of the time of standard blur filters.
- Smart Regional Masking: You have total control over what gets blurred. Draw a selection on your workspace, and the tool will intelligently apply the Box Averaging only to that specific area, preserving the crispness of the surrounding unselected pixels.
- Live Progress Tracking & Cancellation: For larger images or heavy blur radii, the tool provides real-time progress updates at 5% intervals. If the processing takes longer than expected or you change your mind, you can safely cancel the operation mid-way.
- Seamless Undo Integration: Connected directly to PhenoCapture’s undo engine, you can experiment with different blur intensities freely. If a 15×15 blur is too strong, simply undo it and try a 9×9 instead!
🛠️ How to Use the Box Averaging Tool
Step 1: Select Your Target Area (Optional)
If you only want to smooth out a specific section of your image (like a noisy background), use any of the region selection tools to highlight it. If no region is selected, the blur will be applied to the entire image.
Step 2: Choose Your Blur Strength
Navigate to the menu and select your desired Box Averaging level:
- Box Averaging 3×3 (Blur) – Subtle smoothing
- Box Averaging 5×5 (Blur More)
- Box Averaging 7×7 through 15×15 – Progressively stronger blurring
Step 3: Track Progress and Review
Once clicked, the parallel engine will begin processing. For complex tasks, you will see a progress indicator update smoothly. Once finished, inspect your image! If the result isn’t exactly what you wanted, use the standard Undo shortcut to revert to the original image and try another radius.
