Average Image

✨ A Complete Guide to the Average Image Tool

PhenoCapture’s Average Image tool is a powerful feature designed to merge multiple image files into a single, beautifully averaged composite. Whether you are performing noise reduction for scientific analysis, creating long-exposure effects, or stacking time-lapse data, this tool handles heavy image-stacking operations with ease.

💡 Key Features

  • Intuitive Drag-and-Drop: Easily import your datasets by dragging and dropping them straight into the file box. It natively supports all standard image formats, including JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF, and TIFF.
  • Grayscale & Color Processing: Choose exactly how you want your final image calculated. The tool provides dedicated calculation engines for both high-speed Grayscale averaging and full RGB Color averaging.
  • Live File Preview: Want to verify your dataset before crunching the numbers? Simply select any file in the list to instantly view it in the dedicated Preview window.
  • Interruptible Processing: Working with massive image stacks? The tool features a dynamic Stop button that lets you safely cancel both the initial file-scanning phase and the heavy averaging process at any time without freezing the software.
  • Real-Time Status Tracking: Keep an eye on the bottom Status Strip to watch the engine’s exact progress (e.g., “Processing 5th image out of 10”) as it iterates through your files and calculates the final pixel matrix.

🛠️ How to Create an Averaged Image

Step 1: Load Your Images

Open the Average Image tool and drag your sequence of images directly into the file box. If you accidentally drop a massive directory into the tool, you can quickly click the Stop Scanning button to halt the import process.

(Tip: You can click on any individual file from the loaded list to double-check it in the Preview window!)

Step 2: Choose Your Mode

Before processing, select either the Grayscale or Color radio button to define how the pixel math should be calculated for your final composite.

Step 3: Generate the Composite

Click the Create averaged image button. The software will begin analyzing your stack, adding the pixel values of every loaded image together.

  • If you realize you’ve made a mistake or need to halt the operation, simply click Stop.
  • Once the tool finishes processing, the newly averaged image will automatically render in your main workspace, and is safely stored in your Undo history so you can compare it with previous states!

To start a fresh sequence, click Clear to empty the file list and reset the tool.
