Overlay Image

🖼️ A Complete Guide to Overlay Image

PhenoCapture’s Overlay Image tool allows you to seamlessly blend two images together. Whether you need to add a translucent watermark, superimpose a logo, or perform a “green screen” (chroma key) composite by removing a specific background color, this tool gives you absolute precision and flawless blending capabilities.

Here is everything you need to know about combining your images like a pro.

💡 Key Features

  • Smart Chroma Key (One-Click Transparency): You don’t need to manually type in color codes to remove a background. Simply click directly on the background color inside the overlay image box! The tool acts as an instant eyedropper, automatically picking that color and turning it completely transparent.
  • Smooth Feathering: Removing a background color can sometimes leave harsh, jagged edges. By enabling the Feather option, the software softly blurs the transition between the two images, creating a perfectly natural blend.
  • Adjustable Opacity: Control exactly how see-through your top image is. Lower the opacity to create subtle, professional-looking watermarks that don’t distract from the main photo.
  • Zero-Lag Real-Time Preview: The highly optimized rendering engine allows you to adjust opacity, colors, and feathering while seeing the exact composite result instantly on your main workspace.

🛠️ How to Use the Overlay Tool

Merging two images into one perfect composite takes just a few simple steps:

Step 1: Load Your Images

Select your base image and your overlay image. You can choose images currently open in your Image Buffers from the dropdown menus, or simply drag and drop image files straight from your computer into the Source 1 (Overlay) and Source 2 (Base) boxes.

Step 2: Set the Transparent Color (Optional)

If your overlay image has a solid background (like a black or white box around a logo) that you want to hide:

  • Simply click on that background color inside the Source 1 image box. The tool will instantly detect the color and remove it from the preview!
  • You can also manually choose a color using the color presets (White, Black, Green, etc.) or the Color Picker.

Step 3: Adjust Opacity and Blending

  • Use the Opacity slider to make the overlay image semi-transparent.
  • If the edges around your transparent color look too sharp, check the Feather box and slowly increase the radius slider until the edges blend softly into the background.

Step 4: Apply the Composite

Once your real-time preview looks perfectly blended, click OK. The two images will be instantly and permanently merged together on your workspace!

(Tip: If you change your mind during the process, just click the Cancel button to safely close the tool without altering your original base image.)
